We Support
the Whole Teen
One of the key values learned at AFH is persistence. Each day our teen artists and designers are presented with challenges, whether it is how to create consecutive straight lines in a painting without them bleeding into each other, or turn an idea into a prototype without it falling apart. Persisting through art and design challenges and reaching success in their studio work provides the perfect segue to achieving success at school.

AFH makes sure that our teens are not just successful in the studio, but also achieve academic success. Our Education team works with a cohort of 15 volunteer tutors, who donate 325 hours of support. During the 2022 school year, 107 teens participated in AFH’s After-Work Tutoring Program, receiving 2,064 hours of academic support, homework assistance and SAT preparation. That’s dedication on both sides!

It’s this combination of soft skills learned in the creative studios and the dedicated academic and mentoring support that makes the difference for our 370+ teens, and in particular, the graduation success of our seniors.
Outside of tutoring, AFH also offers generous programming advising teens on productive pathways beyond high school, including comprehensive college advising.
2022 Highlights
  • One senior and one alumnus were admitted to the Industry Corps program at Wentworth, each with a $40,000 full ride scholarship and stipend.
  • One senior went global, enrolling at Temple university in Tokyo.
  • Seven seniors were semi-finalists for the Posse Scholarship.
  • AFH facilitated $655,771 in scholarship funds. On average, approximately 91% of off-campus students and 60% of on-campus students had their entire cost of college covered by scholarships.
“I love AFH’s dedication and the value they place on [our] education. I’ve received tremendous feedback and support from the [AFH] advisers…from emails about scholarship and internship opportunities to tutoring after work.“

When a Teen Turns Alumni
One talented AFH alumnus, Brennan Commisso, who had taken a gap year to travel across the US and abroad, enrolled at Temple University this year to study Architecture. Our Education team guided him through the college process, assisting him with his college essay, navigating his gap year plans, understanding his financial aid offers, comparing those offers, and appealing his aid at his top choice—which then yielded even more aid!

We also facilitated a one-year internship at the sneaker company NOBULL for AFH alumnus Dion McKinley, an aspiring fashion designer. AFH offered alumna and artist Ananda Toulon an Exhibitions Assistant position to broaden her skill base, as she builds her artistic career.

This year we took concrete steps to deepen our alumni support by hiring an Alumni Coordinator. With dedicated effort, we look forward to building our alumni network, sharing resources and opportunities year-long and exploring new ways to provide community after high school.
